Long, Hot Weekend Ahead?
Here are several podcast recommendations for staying in, and keeping cool
I am a big fan of audio material. My day-to-day routines are all about multi-tasking, and I rarely have the luxury of sitting still and reading a book. But I can listen to books, articles and podcasts when I am driving, folding laundry, washing dishes, walking to the grocery, cleaning the cat box… you get the point. I listen to a lot of audio books, follow several podcasts, and depend on read articles as well. I figure if I prefer audio content… maybe you all do too!
For this reason, starting this week, I am going to offer my weekly substack in the old-fashioned written format, or you can listen to me reading my substack. (Molly Dickens, friend and creator of the Maternal Stress Project is the one who convinced me. Fingers crossed this works, Molly! BTW you cannot miss Molly’s June 25 article about abortion and mental health is exceptional, if you want to check it out.)
And in the spirit of days off and audio content, I thought I’d also recommend some other podcasts that might help you fill the hot days ahead.
We Can Do Hard Things
My most famous guest appearance was hands down, We Can Do Hard Things. This aired just about a year ago, and truly it was a dream come true to “meet” Glennon, Abby and Amanda. You can find a link to that episode here.
And as if that wasn’t amazing enough, this year We Can Do Hard Things became a book, and a New York Times Bestseller as well! The book is filled with snippets and stories from their episodes… and yours truly can be found on page 417. My quote came under the chapter called How Do I Get Unstuck? And I am pretty proud of that… I like to think that my work indeed helps people get unstuck.
Relationscapes
Blair Hodges is the host of Relationscapes, and of all the pods I’ve recorded, I think Blair did the best job of packing an overview of my book into an hour recording. So if you never got around to reading my book - no judgement! You can listen to this episode and have a pretty good feel for what I wrote about.
Another reason I particularly liked Blair’s interview is that it was different than the others. He didn’t ask me the usual questions – because he doesn’t have the usual perspective. Blair grew up in the Mormon faith and lives in Utah, but he is also deeply committed to LGBTQ+ justice. Relationscapes is not a Mormon podcast in the least… but I find that the questions Blair asks are unique - and I appreciate the social justice passion he brings to his interviews.
Embracing Enough
My friend Dina Scippa invited me to be on her podcast, which just aired this month. That link is here. I think because Dina and I are already good friends, this interview felt the most natural to me. I was 100% at ease, and this meant that we got real deep real fast. Dina and I were able to dig into topics I haven’t been able to discuss with others - specifically looking at the intersection of women’s confidence and household norms. If you’re interested, check out that episode here. Or check out her other episodes!
This newsletter arrives (just about) every Wednesday afternoon. This is in honor of my dad, who used to call Wednesdays “hump day.” He’d say - Katie! You’ve got the majority of the week behind you already, and you’re so close the the weekend. So, when this hits your inbox - even if you don’t read it - think to yourself… congratulations! You made it over the hump, and you’re closing in on the weekend.
July 4th almost always means road trips for me, and I love listening to podcasts while I drive. Can’t wait to tune in! And bonus points for the out loud reading of your newsletter 🎉
