We have come a long way – the gender balance in the home is more equal now than in the past. Men today are doing more than their fathers or grandfathers. But we still have so much further to go.

Data show that women in North America do twice as much household work as their male partners, even in double-income households. And that data doesn’t even capture the emotional burden of managing the home. This domestic imbalance can disrupt a woman’s career and wages, with negative effects compounding over time.

This pattern has not changed with Millennials, and it doesn’t appear to be changing with Gen Z either. Sadly, the gender divide isn’t fixing itself.

So, we know what is holding women back. And we know the problem persists. But where do we go from here? What are our expectations of our partners? What is an equal partner? What does an equal household look like? How do we get there?

These are questions that I have been thinking about for years. And now I am writing a book to answer these questions and to help move the needle on gender equality. I am under contract with St. Martin’s Press to bring Equal Partners to life in 2022. Research and writing are underway, and this newsletter is a way to connect with anyone and everyone interested in this topic.

I do not pretend to have all the answers. Evan and I struggle with this topic as much as any other couple. But I know from professional (and personal) experience that dialog can bring about change. So, I am doing what I know – asking questions, gathering ideas, facilitating a conversation, and sharing stories from others about how to make this happen.
